What Is a Write-In Vote?

A write-in vote allows you to vote for an eligible candidate whose name is not printed on the ballot.

Instead of selecting one of the names already listed, you write the candidate’s name in the space provided for write-in candidates and mark the corresponding oval or arrow.

Alexander Angeles is running as a write-in candidate for Chicago Board of Education District 8B. That means his name will not appear as a printed option on the ballot.

But voters in District 8B still have a choice.

How to Vote for Alexander

When you reach the contest for Chicago Board of Education – District 8B:

1. Find the write-in space.
Look underneath or at the end of the candidates listed for the District 8B School Board race.

2. Write: ALEXANDER ANGELES
Clearly write Alexander Angeles on the blank write-in line.

3. Mark the oval or arrow next to the write-in space.
Writing the name alone is not enough. Illinois voting instructions say voters should also fill in the oval or complete the arrow beside the write-in candidate’s name.

4. Review your ballot.
Before submitting your ballot, make sure the name is readable and that the corresponding voting mark has been completed.

Why Isn’t Alexander’s Name on the Ballot?

Write-in candidates run without having their names printed alongside candidates who qualified for ballot placement.

That does not mean voters are limited to the candidate whose name appears on the ballot.

Illinois law allows voters to cast votes for qualified write-in candidates. However, write-in votes are counted only for candidates who have properly filed the required Declaration of Intent to be a Write-In Candidate.

One Name on the Ballot Doesn’t Mean One Choice.

District 8B voters deserve the opportunity to decide who represents them.

This campaign exists to give our community another option and another voice in the future of Chicago Public Schools.

Who Can Vote for Alexander?

Alexander Angeles is running specifically for:

Chicago Board of Education – District 8B

Only voters whose ballot includes the District 8B School Board race can vote for Alexander in this contest.

If you’re unsure whether you live in District 8B, use the official CPS School Board member map to check your district before Election Day.

Important: Don’t Vote Twice in the Same Race

If you choose to vote for Alexander, do not also select another candidate in the District 8B contest.

Illinois warns that voting for more candidates than the number allowed in a particular office creates an overvote, which can result in no candidate receiving your vote in that contest.

So for District 8B:

Write Alexander Angeles → Mark the write-in oval → Do not select another candidate in that race.

Your selections in other races on the ballot are unaffected.

Can Write-In Candidates Actually Win?

Yes.

A write-in candidate faces a more difficult path because voters must know the candidate’s name and actively write it onto their ballot rather than simply selecting a printed option.

But a properly qualified write-in candidate can receive votes and win an election if they receive enough valid votes.
